Corner Molding

Corner moldings, or corner blocks, are a work of pure genius. Why bother with difficult compound corner cuts when installing crown molding when you can buy matched corner pieces that your flat moldings will easily line up with?

Corner molding can be found in the same area of your local home improvement store as your longer 8 foot pieces, and there are usually dozens of styles to choose from. Most of them are matched to the molding styles available, however some are plain giving you the option to use them with any decorative style. Whether you prefer antique or contemporary, you can find the perfect corner blocks to meet your needs.

Corner MoldingCorner molding actually comes in two types, inside and outside. You wouldn't initially think of anything other than the inside molding for your interior corners, but some rooms that are in more of an L-shape have at least one outside corner where it wraps outward instead of inward. The good news is that these outsides blocks are available also. Just be sure you buy the correct piece for your project. The outside and inside blocks are cut to specifically match your type of wall. One problem you may consider is whether your outside corners are rounded, which is a very common practice today. Most standard size outside corner blocks are cut assuming a sharp, flat 90 degree edge. If your outside corner is rounded you may need to use a router to smooth out the harsh corner, or have your corner blocks custom made.
